June 28th -July 2nd
Oriel House Hotel, Ballincollig
‘Family feuds and narrow escapes fill the world of this thrilling new piece.’
Inspired by the Shakespearean classic Romeo and Juliet, tension feeds Roundhouse’s production of Romek & Julie, taking place in the Tobin Suite of the Oriel House Hotel, in Ballincollig from June 28th - July 2nd.
Set against the backdrop of Cork City, Irish and Polish ex construction workers try to make ends meet by smuggling cigarettes into Cork city. The plan goes belly up and betrayal seems like a means to an end for Taghd. However, Marcuycy, Taghd’s Polish arch enemy, has other plans in mind. Marcuycy selfishly leads himself and his brother Romek into a war with Taghd and his cronies. Caught in the passion between loyalty to his brother and love for his lady, Julie, Romek becomes a victim of circumstances that have spirelled out of his control.
Amid the bad blood of these two foes, Julie is caving from the pressure of her family, who feel she is too young at 18 to be involved in such an intense relationship. Her father, who was once the owner of a large construction company that employed hundreds, spends most of his time in slippers, muttering about his failings. Her mother, strung up and trying to cope leans heavily on the advice of Taghd, her nephew who manipulates her perception of Romek to meet his own scheme and try to keep Julie from finding out his plans. Julie is lost in her confusion when she meets Romek late one night and hopes that they can hatch a plan to escape the narrowing situation. However, it is not comfort Romek will give to Julie on this night but betrayal. Romek & Julie face an uncertain future, a short uncertain future.
Roundhouse’s Romek & Julie poses a number of questions to today’s society that is currently struggling through a recession and looks at the battles that are constantly being fought between the different cultures now existing in Ireland and the similar battles we are really all fighting together.

Good luck to Roundhouse Productions and the Oriel House Hotel with their tension filled presentation of Romek & Julie. Heritage Explorer Productions are currently tweaking the final touches of their present-umentary of the Irish Gunpowder Story. With the the focus of that story centred upon the old Gunpowder facilities at Ballincollig we will be watching with interest the Romek & Julie visit to Ballincollig.
